LeCroy Introduces Top End Digital Oscilloscope and Serial Data Analyzer both with 20 GS/s per Channel Sampling Rates

Chestnut Ridge, NY For Release July 1, 2003

LeCroy Corporation introduces the model 8620A oscilloscope, and SDA 6020 Serial Data Analyzer, two new flagship instruments based on its innovative WaveMasterTM digital oscilloscope (DSO) platform. Both the model 8620A and model 6020 have increased real-time sampling rate of 20GS/s per channel, that, when coupled with the instruments’ 6 GHz bandwidth, 75 ps rise time, and memory up to 48 million points per channel, makes these instruments the most advance real time oscilloscopes. The instruments can capture high-speed signals or very fast edges with industry leading signal integrity. LeCroy X-StreamTM Technology enables a wide range of measurements to be made up to 100 times faster than other oscilloscopes and the user can insert customized waveform math or parameter calculation routines directly into the processing stream of the instrument. With unmatched overall performance, the WaveMaster 8620A gives engineers working on next-generation designs the ability to conduct highly accurate advanced WaveShape Analysis on multi-gigahertz circuits. The SDA 6020 is designed specifically for evaluating the physical layer characteristics of both optical and electrical serial data signals up to 3.5 Gbits/sec.

The WaveMaster model 8620A is fully compatible with LeCroy’s wide assortment of passive and active, single-ended and differential probing solutions for the WaveMaster oscilloscope line, including the new WaveLink family of active probes. When used in conjunction with the 7.5 GHz D600 active differential probe, the model 8620A offers 6 GHz system bandwidth at the probe tip. The WaveLink probes also offer the lowest circuit loading and smallest attenuation of any high bandwidth differential probe. Together, the WaveMaster 8620A and WaveLink D600 provide the highest performance DSO/probe combination available.

The WaveMaster model 8620A also allows the user to create customized parameter measurements or waveform math functions and insert them into the DSO’s UI (user interface). Users can write a visual basic script, MATLAB, MATHCAD, or Excel function and integrate it seamlessly into the model 8620A’s processing chain, without having to run a different program, establish remote communications between the DSO and another program, create a new reference waveform, or transfer large data files between the DSO and another program. Once defined, implementation of a custom measurement or function is no more difficult than a typical "cut and paste" activity.

Featuring a host of application-specific measurement capabilities, the SDA model 6020 accurately and reliably performs measurements on high-speed serial data streams according to a wide range of formats and standards – including Fiber Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, InfiniBand, IEEE 1394, and SONET/SDH (up to 3.5 Gb/s). The analyzer can conduct a host of measurements on serial data signals, including eye pattern, jitter and bit error rate.

The WaveMaster model 8620A and SDA model 6020 feature clock accuracy of 1 ppm (an industry leading specification), sample rate and delay time accuracy of better than 1 ppm (for a ten second interval), and trigger jitter of less than 2.5 ps. Both instruments also have a 5 GHz trigger bandwidth – the fastest available in a long memory oscilloscope.

The WaveMaster model 8620A and SDA model 6020 offer a choice of acquisition memory lengths, starting with 2 Mpoints per channel and extending to 48 million points per channel.

Both the WaveMaster model 8620A and SDA model 6020 provide industry-best analysis performance because they have been designed with LeCroy’s proprietary X-Stream Technology, an extremely fast streaming architecture for handling and analyzing data in a DSO. The front end of the X-Stream Technology architecture starts at the output of the ADCs, which produce a 20 Gbyte/sec real time data stream on each of the four input channels. The data streams into superfast CMOS memory chips that accept the 20 Gbytes/sec data rate for up to 48 million points of continuous acquisition. X-Stream Technology also features powerful software algorithms that optimize the use of L1 cache such that data packets and analysis routines for performing measurements on those packets will as often as possible be simultaneously resident in the microprocessor cache. This enables engineers to work faster, attain a higher level of confidence that signal characteristics have been accurately measured, and troubleshoot subtle problems that are often found in multi-gigahertz technologies.

Other Features

An internal printer is also available with the WaveMaster model 8620A and SDA model 6020, as is an optional removable hard drive. With this option, multiple users can have complete control over saved data files, panel setups, or customized measurements. It also allows secure storage of proprietary/classified data.

A host of software packages and accessories are available for use with the WaveMaster model 8620A and SDA 6020. XMATH is an advanced math package that expands the basic FFT function to accommodate all acquired points, provides averaging in the frequency domain, and enables measurements of spectral power density, real and imaginary components, and frequency domain parameters. With the XDEV option, users can create custom measurement parameters and display the results on the DSO screen. XDEV also provides the ability to program the instruments using ActiveX, Automation language, embedded scripts (MATLAB, MATHCAD or Visual Basic), and other open Windows features. The XMAP option includes the advanced math power of XMATH and the custom measurement capability of XDEV.
