Intra-Pair Skew Measurements using SPARQ Network Analyzers


Problem:

How can I use my SPARQ network analyzer to perform intra-pair skew measurements?

Solution:

Intra-pair skew is the result of different propagation delays on two signal paths.  The SPARQ network analyzer can measure intra-pair skew between the two paths by performing a delta time at level measurement on the acquired step responses.

Step 1. Configure Ports

Setup the SPARQ network analyzer for a four-port, single-ended measurement.  This example configures the ports from 1 to 2 and 3 to 4.  This is the port configuration we typically recommend, but you may assign ports as appropriate for your application.

Step 2. Generate Step Responses

Configure the Result Display to show a step response for S21, S43, S12, and S34.  

Initiate the SPARQ network analyzer to perform S-Parameter measurements.  The result will display the four step responses.

Step 3.  Setup Delta Time at Level Measurement

Select Measure > Measure Setup… from the drop-down menu at the top of the window.  

Setup parameters P1 and P2 to be a dtime@level parameter using the step responses as the sources. 

In this example, the measurements correlate as follows:

P1 – delta time between the step response of S21 and S43

P2 – delta time between the step response of S12 and S34
