Teledyne LeCroy has worked with industry leaders to create the first physical layer test package for the BroadR-Reach Ethernet PHY. BroadR-Reach is a 100 Mbps transceiver engineered to meet the stringent requirements of the automotive industry, dramatically reducing connectivity cost and cabling weight.

Automated and Easy-to-Use Solution

QPHY-BroadR-Reach is an automated compliance test package that performs electrical compliance testing of the Physical Media Attachment (PMA) for a BroadR-Reach Ethernet PHY. It provides connection diagrams to ensure the proper setup for the required measurements, automates the oscilloscope for performing these measurements, and provides a comprehensive report of results including screenshots. These capabilities make QPHY-BroadR-Reach an all-inclusive test suite that meets the needs of BroadR-Reach transceiver compliance testing.

Complete Electrical Compliance Test

The complete Teledyne LeCroy BroadR-Reach compliance test package will perform all electrical transmitter compliance tests as defined in section 5.4 of the BroadR-Reach Physical Layer Transceiver Electrical Requirement for Automotive Applications v2.0. The following tests are included in the QualiPHY solution: Transmitter Output Droop, Transmitter Timing Jitter, Transmit Clock Frequency, Transmitter Distortion, and Transmitter Power Spectral Density. Teledyne LeCroy provides a complete test package including the necessary test fixture and cables required for proper configuration. In addition, the test software includes the MATLAB script from the BroadR-Reach 2.0 specification required for the Transmitter Distortion test.

Teledyne LeCroy’s WaveRunner 6 Zi series of oscilloscopes are the ideal instruments for performing BroadRReach compliance measurements and more importantly for debugging compliance failures allowing the engineers to quickly find the root cause of serial data problems.

Transmitter Output Droop

The output droop is calculated on both the “+1” and “-1” symbols, as per the BroadR-Reach specification. The magnitude of the droop is measured with respect to an initial peak value after the zero crossing (indicated by Max and Min parameters) and the value 500 ns after the initial peak value (indicated by the cursors).

Transmitter Jitter Timing & Transmit Clock Frequency

The Transmitter Jitter Timing and Transmit Clock Frequency are tested simultaneously. A passing result requires the transmit clock frequency and the jitter value to be within the specified range. With the DUT in test mode 2, the root mean square (RMS) jitter is measured separately on both the master (JTXout) and on the slave (Tx_TCLK). The RMS jitter values are calculated over 1 ms at 10 GS/s relative to an unjittered reference resulting in 10 Mpts.

Transmit Distortion Test

The peak distortion is determined by capturing output from the device under test (DUT) while it is in test mode 4. Ten records with one sample per UI are saved, at 10 equally spaced starting phases. The MATLAB script provided in the specification removes the disturbing sine wave and measures peak distortion at equally spaced phases of the symbol period. To pass, the script must report less than 15mV distortion for 10 records.

Transmitter Power Spectral Density (PSD)

Using the defined mask in section 5.4.4 of the BroadR-Reach specification, the PSD of the transmitter is tested against the specified limits defined by the mask.
